McAllister Park

Location: Lubbock, Texas

Client: City of Lubbock

Project Completion: 2002

Project Size: 4 Ballfields and Amenities

Total Budget: $1,700,000

Chapman Harvey Architects, Inc. provided architectural services to the City of Lubbock for the design of the Cavazos Baseball Complex structures.  The design for the Cavazos Baseball Complex at Bill McAllister Park includes three baseball fields with a planned addition of a fourth field.  Amenities that support the baseball fields include three press boxes, a concession stand, toilet facilities, site illumination, and a fully irrigated and landscaped site.  The Cavazos Baseball Complex was designed with several issues in mind: accessibility and comfort of sports spectators and participants.

Site considerations included the evaluation of solar and wind patterns in order to maximize the comfort of the ballpark users.  The concession facility and the toilet facility are two separate buildings joined by a covered courtyard space. The covered courtyard provides shelter from the sun while channelling the breezes for cooling effect.  Shading devices, strategically placed in the stands, provide shade while allowing free ventilation.  The semi-enclosed structures help control the climate and enhance user comfort and facility enjoyment.
